Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

What exactly was the Serpent in Eden? Was it the Devil in a different form or was it a different celestial being altogether? The popular idea is that the Serpent was the Devil popularized by some Bible scriptures. This scriptures can be found in Isaiah 27:1, Job 41:34, Revelations 12:3-17 and 20:2.

Though this sounds like the Bible is saying the two are the same, this is not the case. The Word of YAH is merely comparing them. Much like scripture did with the Apostle Peter in Matthew 26:22-23 which reads, “Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Jesus was in this verse spoke to Satan, who was using Peter to deceive Christ at this time. Not meaning that Peter was Satan. The same thing happens much today in modern society where the actions of men are compared to devils and demons. They may be influenced by them but are not one in the same. Further more, scripture describes the Serpent as being a different creature altogether.

Genesis 3:1 reads, “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” The verse states that He was a “beast of the field” meaning a animal and not a fallen angel.

Genesis 3:1-6 we can read that the Serpent has reasoning power, speech and could orchestrate deception. Genesis 3:14 says the Serpent walked upright and was in fact an animal. Also, the fact that the Serpent spoke and Eve was not afraid of Him means that the Serpent was a close creation to that of Man.

Though the Serpent was not Satan he was used to bring about the Fall of Man, and the Serpent Seed (see the Unfamiliar Bible Facts Section). Satan saw that this animal was close in relation to Adam and Eve, and could be used to deceive them. Though this Serpent is no longer in our modern time, many men and women are being used in this same way today. Stay prayerful and be blessed, Shalom…
